Is this an example of a scam email as no links within it work?

I’ve had an email, allegedly from EonNext that includes all my details - name, account number etc, inviting me to join the National energy saving initiative this winter but on clicking the link, nothing works.

The email has come from:

hi@m.eonnext.com

This is slightly different from the web contact email; I.e. that has no “m” before eonnext.com.

So; can anyone tell me (preferably someone from EonNext) if this is a scam and if so, how they got my account number and name?

If none of the links work, I think you can be confident that the mail came from EONext and is genuine. Scammers do a better job.

I had the same email from the same email address yesterday and the link just took me to a blank page when using my iPhone. I tried again on my PC and everything worked OK. I signed up to the Energy Shift scheme 👍

The mail has come from a subdomain.

For instance, their main Web domain is eonnext.com. So the main website for logging into E.On Next to service your account would be www.eonnect.com.

Mail originating or sent via that domain would go to @eonnext.com, as in hi, unhappy, CEO, etc.

This forum is on a subdomain, called community, hence the Web address is www.community.eonnext.com.

The prefix m is usually used for a mobile version of a website. When you go to any website, the server usually gets information on what browser you are using and what operating system. If the server detects you are using a browser on a phone, then instead of connecting you to the regular website (www.eonnext.com), it will point your browser at the 'mobile optimised' version of the website (www.m.eonnext.com).

Email can also be associated with different subdomains, although this is not that common. So, an email address or link from m.eonnext.com just means it's from the mobile subdomain.

The mail was 100% legitimate....it was access to their website from Apple devices that was the problem.

You probably ended up getting a blank page for the same reason that folks couldn't log in yesterday from iPhone, Mac or iPad...the site wasn't working for Apple users.

No, if you try it from a computer which tells the server you are not using a mobile OS or browser, it will just ignore you! Try the link again, missing out the m. And it will possibly work fine.

Sometimes you get lucky. Not all browsers send the same information. Any good webserver should be able to redirect to the desktop site if accessing a mobile link from a 'pooter, and vice versa, but not all permutations and combinations work correctly.

I used to have no end of gyp trying to do Barclays online banking from a Nokia E71 about ten years ago. Always took me to the m.barclays.co.uk website which didn't allow me to do what I wanted. I had to 'force it' to use the desktop site, and then do a lot of scrolling to navigate around on a 3" screen.
