I need help!

I moved into my home in Feb this year, since being here the bills have been extremely high, for some unexplained reason. It’s a one bedroom with just me occupying it. My meter is a smart meter I believe a SMET2, I don’t have a meter/screen to monitor it in my home. The heating is never on, most electrics are switch off when not in use apart from fridge, internet and fire/heat alarms. This month I’ve had to resort to switching off the electricity at the mains when I leave the flat because I cannot work out where the usage is coming from, I’ve been charged just over £200 from 15 March to 15 April 2022. I don’t work from home anymore because if I did I’m sure the bill would probably in excess of £300! I’ve asked Eon to check my meter which was met with this useless response:

    Hi ,
I am sorry to hear your bill is higher than expected, however as we have billed you to the meter readings that you have provided it would seem as though your billing is accurate.
If you aren't sure, then please check the meter readings that are stated on your bill up against your actual meter, just to make sure we didn't make any mistakes!
If everything is accurate and the bill is still high, please don't panic! We can work out a payment plan that is completely tailored to you - we don't expect you to be able to pay this off in one lump sum :)
We are finding these larger bills to be quite common now - especially during lockdown with customers spending so long inside their homes and with a lot of people working from home.
We are always here for anything you need, please just ring us on 0808 501 5200 and we will help you create a payment plan that is tailored around you :)

    Does any have any tips?

    Hi there @cinders850 👋

Hannah here, one of you Community Co-Ordinators. I am sorry to hear that you didn't get the most helpful response from us! Our Energy Specialists always try to be as helpful as possible; so this is unfortunate to hear!

The usage does sound a little on the high side, but as highlighted in that email - we can't really do much/get to the bottom of things if the reads are from yourself and accurate! BUT it may be something to do with the wiring in some appliances, the best way to test this is to get a energy usage plug - these will be able to tell if something is wrong and causing the higher bills. I actually experienced this myself, and found my microwave was using wayyyyy more than it should, and was bumping my bill up by at least £50 🤭.

Do you have storage heaters in the property? Electric only? Please do let me know!

We have a lot of members here that can really help you to curb this and come to a more cost effective solution for you, but of course if you'd rather talk to us then please message us via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and we can see what's going on 😊

Sorry to hear this. Can you post a picture of your meter please? Meters do go wrong occasionally and our volunteer expert @theunknowntech can talk you through some tests you can do your self - but it helps to have some more clues.

In the meantime are you on economy 7 or similar? Can you post your readings so that we can double check your bills - are the figures in the bills your actuals or their estimates?

My daughter had the same problem in a bottom flat her bills have more than halfed since she moved she found it was the storage heaters using the electric because of the type they were they still used electric Wen she thout they were not in use because they were constantly linked up to the power and they were using it to recharge inside to produce heat Wen on i don't know if this has any relevance to your usage but it could be somthing draining it that you are unaware off just a thout hope you get it sorted thou and i hope your not struggling too much
