Defunct Smart Meters / IHD

  • KriegeR's Avatar
On the 9th of March this year we had both our gas and electric meters replaced with smart units.

The engineer was on site for a considerable amount of time, but eventually got things working ... or that's what I thought. Basically our situation is as follows:

    1. When the engineer left, our IHD was waiting to acquire data from the gas meter. The engineer said we'd probably have to wait 48 hours, restart the IHD, and it should pick it up.
    2. After 48 hours the electricity readings appeared to be working fine - still no gas readings.
    3. Around a week ago we had to have the power off for a number of hours - the IHD ran flat and subsequently turned itself off.
    4. When power was restored the IHD powered back up, but instead of showing anything, it just says "Waiting for ..." and never has anything on the display.

So if we look at the consumption now screen on the IHD, we see "Waiting for cost now...". If we go to the gas or electric (or both) consumption history screens, we just get "Waiting for current data...". The gas screen has shown this since the date of fitting, even after the 48 hours bedding in period described by yhe engineer. The electricity screens used to work until the power off and restart of the IHD. It's showing a strong connection to the meter (wifi signal full bars), and the clock is showing the correct time even if restarted (shows 00:00 briefly, but then switches to the correct time).

It has been like this for 5 days now. I've just signed up to EOn Next and examined my bill. It turns out that the smart gas meter appears to have lost it's 'smartness' as it's never submitted a reading automatically since being fitted.

Could we have some assistance with this please? We agreed to have smart meters fitted to facilitate the meter-reading process, but all it looks to be doing is messing things up further.

No worries, I think I can help figure this out. My name's theunknowntech by the way. I'm a forum volunteer who travels around a lot and I patrol this forum quite often. I can't access your account though as I have no access to any systems outside of this forum.

How far away is the gas meter from the electric meter and are there any obstructions in the way such as thick walls - or even stone/brick walls? These can act as a signal blocker and cause issues with the link between both meters. If you could also post some photos of your meters and IHD, that would be great.

@KriegeR I think there may be an issue with your billing here and perhaps the billing schedule. If you haven't done so already, I would reach out to an Energy Specialist on Facebook or Twitter so they can have a look into your account for you.

Let me know how you get on!

@KriegeR Hi there, looks like you could do with sending your account details to me in a DM and I'll see how we can help. Hat

    Hi.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but we are still having difficulties here.

The original problem has gone away - it took the smart meters nearly a month to connect and stop saying 'Waiting for data...' but now everything seems to be operating as expected (or nearly as expected I should say).

What is concerning me at the moment is that there is no gas on any of my recent bills! Only electricity! The IHD appears to intermittently show consumption with the gas flame icon but more often than not, if I view gas-only or the combined has and electricity, the gas summary shows nothing - the combined only shows electricity. If I go to the summary of gas meter readings, there aren't any! Electricity readings are being gathered as expected on a regular basis, but gas is simply not appearing!

What is the explanation for this? I requested the smart meters hoping that this would all be done automatically, but clearly something isn't working with this system.
