Are EOn Next planning to provide a Vehicle to Grid tariff? (Similar to EOn Germany who have already partnered with BMW to provide customers with V2G https://www.eon.com/en/innovation/in...G-product.html )

V2G works by using your EV's storage, allowing excess energy to be sent back to the grid (there is also V2H allowing energy to power only your house with no export to the grid, and V2L is another option just powering individual local devices)

The obvious benefit is that no investment is required for a bank of expensive static batteries, or possibly even the need for solar.

There are currently only a very limited number of V2X vehicles and bi-directional chargers available, but the number will be increasing quickly.

A V2x tariff would need to include some incentive to cover the export element of the V2G. The competition are offering totally free EV charging, since they are using your EV battery to store then taking back some of that energy at peak times (obviously the system is intelligent enough to leave you with the required charge for your EV driving). https://octopus.energy/power-pack/

My only hesitation with this is the manufacturer’s warranty / liability.
Right now they are happy to warranty for 8 years and 100,000 miles or so - that’s about 500 charge / discharge cycles.
Used as a utility battery, you may see an extra cycle a day - so 3000 over 8 years. No idea how they will live up to that kind of use and whether that too will be covered under warranty. I’d hate to get to 2 years and 600 cycles and have a dead battery and no warranty.

@rwh202 - 👍yeah agree totally, but for me as a very low mileage PHEV owner the only reason to buy a full EV would be basically as an alternative to installing static batteries.

So the slight degradation of the EV range over time would be offset by the cost saving of not having to install solar/battery storage.

From what I've read the degradation of early EVs has not been as bad as had been originally suggested - for instance Toyota Prius batteries generally last 150,000 to 250,000+ miles (10–15+ years), with typical degradation occurring at roughly 2%–3% annually, often retaining 70%–80% capacity after 10 years.

It’s not the gradual degradation that’s a worry.
It’s the sudden unexpected cell or module failure that leaves you with a dead car and multi thousands repair bill and a void warranty.
Yes, I like the idea of better utilising the resource I already own and not having a separate battery, but a a 16 kWh home battery setup is only £3k now, without needing a new supported car and a £1500 bidirectional EVSE.

Fogstar, fox, eco-worthy etc. for battery and pair with suitable inverter. Or even Sunsynk are reaching those prices and making things like powerwall look very overpriced if all you need is straight forward battery storage.
