This may have always been so, but I've only just noticed that the IHD is registering gas usage throughout the night, when the system is off between the hours of 00.00 and 06.00 (see figures below).
the IHD gets its data from the meter via the communication hub (on top of the electric meter). So it’s not going to report anything different to the meter. I would strongly suggest closing the stop valve to the meter at 00:00 and then check the consumption again in the morning, which should of course be zero. If there is consumption then you have you answer.
if any of the pipework goes outside the home a leak cold be outside.
do you use an app like bright or the eon next app. If so you can look back up to 13 months of data to see if this matter is of long standing.
your boiler will not have a pilot light. A leak within the boiler would allow gas to escape to the outside. If the boiler is a combi it is possible that its firing periodically to provide instant internal hot water - you would be able to turn this facility off by referring to the boiler user manual. This has just become my favourite option - now that I’ve thought of it!

Just to confirm, you have no heating on over night? Are your statements correct? Bare in mind that your IHD is just to gauge an idea on your usage and isn't 100% accurate. 😁

Thanks for your reply. Yes, everything is off. I'm just concerned that there might be a leak somewhere in the system but I certainly can't smell anything irregular.
As the IHD is, as you say, just a gauge, I'm going to make a note of the usage reading on the actual meter at midnight and 6am, to see what that reveals.
does you boiler have pilot light - this may be the case if it’s a very old boiler? If you have other gas appliance(fire hob oven) then there might be a faulty valve allowing a small amount of gas to escape.
you may have a gas leak, how is your sense of smell?
the meter may be faulty! Turn the supply off by using the valve immediately prior to the meter. If consumption is still recorded the meter is faulty. My money’s on this being the cause.
the IHD is accurately reflecting what the meter is recording. It can be out in its pricing but not in its recording of consumption per the meter. A fault in the meter is still my best bet. Modern meters have sensors to detect the flow of gas, rather than the bellow of older meters. Both though can develop faults.
We just have the boiler and a gas oven, and there could be a small leak at the coupling, but I have a good sense of smell and I’m pretty sure I would pick that up.
The boiler is a Worcester-Bosch Greenstar 15Ri, and a good 10 years old, but that was serviced recently and was passed all the checks. Not sure if that has a pilot.
I’m going to make a note of the reading on the smart meter at midnight, and again at 6am, just to see if there’s some discrepancy between that and the IHD.
It’s going to be a process of elimination, because you say, it could be that the meter is faulty.
Firstly, it's not a combo boiler, so I guess we can rule that out. I'm going to turn everything off at midnight and see what that reveals.
I have the EON and IVIE apps on my phone, and both are showing similar readings. The EON app is always a couple of days behind, but the IVIE app is showing zero gas usage between midnight and 6am on the 21st, slightly more on 22nd, then a jump on the 23rd, and back down again on 24th. Not sure if I can trust that 100% though.
there should be a facility to isolate the boiler from the supply, same for the oven And anything else. So it will have to be a process of elimination as to the cause.
as the boiler is not a combi, I think starting from isolating the meter and then working then onto isolation the devices in turn would be my approach. If you can smell gas from the flue of the boiler when it’s not firing that would be a firm pointer. Good luck with your detective work.
No facility to isolate, I'm afraid, as it's a fairly basic set-up. Thanks for all your advice, and I'll let you know if I find the source of the problem.
