Was woken from my slumbers yesterday by a guy checking for water quality at my kitchen tap.
Apparently customers are selected at random (that's me folks!) and one can only be tested if there are no filters or softeners in the line to the tap. My kitchen tap is the only one inside that is not supplied via my water softener, so that was OK.
Water was run at a slow rate to clear the mains pipe of any water that had been sitting for a while and then a series of tests were run. I had no concerns about my water supply as we had the the lead mains feed disconnected in 1978 in favour of HDPE blue polypipe. And that was confirmed by his tests. I'll also be able to check in a coupe of weeks what the lab tests reveal. It good to know that such testing exists.
Lead water supply pipes are still common in older properties - I know of somebody nearby who had part of their supply pipe converted by the water company to bring it back within specification.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
@meldrewreborn thank you for sharing this, it good to know such test are still available and it's reassuring that they have such clear protocols, like only testing unfiltered taps to ensure they get an accurate sample that reflects the actual supply quality. You can also check via the Seven Trent Water website for water quality if you do have any issues.
Do the lab reports get automatically sent to you?

I was selected at random. The lab results are available online (once completed!) and are eventually grouped with others to provide a post code information source.
my water is provided by Affinity Water, and sewage services by Thames. There is no choice , so in effect it’s a local monopoly!
@meldrewreborn oh I see! it is good to know, we wasn't given much information about the water supplied to our new property other than it was provided by Seven Trent and then later to find we have a water meter and are still waiting for a bill 🙈 even after contacting them on a number of times!
