New solar panel heating setup fitted & running

    Hi there,

I've just had all the old Economy7 storage heaters taken out and the new solar panel heating system installed. They completed the install, setup and were switched on Wednesday 22nd October 2025. We were informed by them to let you know that the switchover has been completed hence the posting of this message. Not sure if this is the correct place to do so but was advised doing it via the forum would be the easiest. I can of course provide all the relevant details (account number, name and address etc). I would also add that we are on the Next Flex tariff and payment method is non direct debit.

Any help/info concerning this matter is much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

@Dug - this is primarily a customer to customer forum, but there are EOn "nexties" who monitor and respond... So you presumably need to contact Customer Services referencing the Smart Meter Team if you need changes to your metering.

Presumably your query relates to getting your meter reconfigured from an E7 2-rate setup to a single rate (assuming that you already have a Smets2 smart meter)

There have been discussions here where the meter may still be 2R, but the day and night register readings both have the same single tariff applied so essentially the sum total of the 2 registers is treated as a single reading for billing.

Also, if you are considering one of the Time of Use (ToU) tariffs such as Next Drive or Smart Saver, the register readings become irrelevant since you will be billed on the ½ hourly ToU consumption.

@geoffers Hi and thanks for the prompt reply, it's much appreciated. I don't have any experience with this so please excuse my ignorance and any "dumb" questions I may fire your way.

We don't have any kind of smart meter installed and don't want one either. We are also not considering one of the Time of Use (ToU) tariffs. With that in mind, is there a need for the meter to be reconfigured from a 2-rate setup to a single rate (it might already be single rate). You mentioned the meter can stay on a 2-rate setup and be treated as single reading for billing but is this somehow tied to the previous Economy7 system which isn't in the property anymore. If possible we would just like to continue on the same Next Flex tariff we've always had but linked to the new solar panel heating system. Reading some other forum posts it mentions you need to switch tariff from E7 to standard but does this mean changing from Next Flex. I also read that this switch over needs no work, no replacement meter and is simply an update of your tariff.

Any further advice is greatly appreciated, thanks again.

@Dug - a couple more things relating to this -
    • presumably the generation for your "solar panel heating" system is purely used by you (is it a solar thermal/water heating system, or Photovoltaic cells) However if photovoltaic and you want to export any excess electricity back to the grid you presumably would need to get a smart meter which would send the export reading to the supplier
    • Maybe just wait & see in relation to the E7 setup : you will still be getting billed at the cheaper rate for all your household leccy overnight

@geoffers Hi and thanks again for the quick reply. It is solar Photovoltaic panels with the generation being solely used by me, not interested in exporting any excess so presumably a smart meter isn't required. As mentioned in the previous reply, all we would like to do is keep everything the same (staying on the Next Flex tariff) just with Eon knowing that we're now using a solar photovoltaic panel system instead of the E7 storage heaters/system which have all been removed.

@Indyk_EONNext Hi Indyk, thanks for the welcome message and advice, it's much appreciated. I have refrained from contacting customer services by phone as I have poor hearing which usually makes it difficult/confusing (for both parties). Is it possible for you to complete the action required in confirming what I have outlined in this forum post if I was to DM you and provide all my account details? Failing that, can it be done via email to hi@eonnext.com perhaps by linking this thread or is it strictly phone only.

    Thanks again, Dug

After having spoke with Indyk_EONNext via DM, my original query/requirement has now been fully resolved and I've received confirmation that Eon now know about my switch over from the Economy7 storage heater setup to a solar Photovoltaic panel system and as requested I will stay on the Next Flex tariff and also keep the same payment method. Indy has provided regular contact via DM with clear and concise advice/instruction which has been very easy to understand and with a personable manner. Thank you again Indy for all your help here and via DM, it's been greatly appreciated - give this lady a raise or employee of the month!

Thank you also to user "geoffers" for advice in this thread.
