I have been looking at the Simple Demand Shift service, where during TurnDown Events I can earn credit. That I understand, but TurnUp Events, where I must increase electricity consumption to earn credits seems counterintuitive.
I would like to implement automations to harness this, e.g. I need a webhook trigger to call a URL of my definition to switch stuff on or off.
Turn up might seem unintuitive but is simply down to a surplus of energy - typically from renewables.
The energy needs to be used and demand matched to the supply to prevent grid instability.
The alternative is to ask the generators to ‘turn down’ their supply - this is called curtailment and their supply contracts typically make this a very expensive proposition - it is cheaper to pay people to use it instead. You can see a similar consequence of this when the wholesale price of energy is negative - you get paid to take it.
