Bo Hoo! My Gas built in Double oven has given up - the grill still works but the oven is caput - the timer has gone completely. Since its 36 years old approx its no surprise that you can't get parts for it - believe me I've tried.

I've also tried to get a replacement, but that too has come to naught - very few models are advertised but none of the retailers have them in stock - they have been ghosted!

And this applies to 90cm built in units and 70/60 CM built under units too. You can still get traditional cookers with gas hobs on top - but i wonder for how long?

I think in a way it is the fact that these appliances last so long that has led to them disappearing from the market.

Faced with having to have a 32A new circuit installed to cope with an electric model, and the cost and disruption that would cause, I've bought a second hand model about 8 years old as a stop gap (maybe longer term - who knows) as this gets us cooking with gas again.

But The cost was very surprising £10.78!!! I've got to travel to the other side of London to get it, but given the alternative its really worth it.

Just a quick warning:- unless you have a fully up to date Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for the whole household, it is likely that the electrician will need to carry out a full wiring test and inspection, bringing everything up to BS 7671 (18th Edition) electrical regs. and remedy any faults (which could include a complete rewire) before they will be able to install any new cooker circuits.

This was the case when I had my new kitchen, but luckily the wiring was fine and most of the remedial work was just the installation of a new consumer unit, and adding green/yellow sheaths to the CPC wires (plus adding grommets) in all the switches/sockets

At least I'm happy that everything is up to spec, and now have an EICR which is invaluable when installing additional circuitry, and probably a requirement if the house is sold.

thanks for that information. Rented properties certainly have to be compliant, so there’s no real justification for owner occupied properties being of a lower standard. But I do wonder whether the industry regards these continual regulation changes as essential to improving their incomes rather than public safety.

AFAIK: It's only when you get new electrical work done that the existing needs to be brought up to standard, which is actually a good thing safety-wise.

However an existing installation is kind of OK as it stands (though I bet insurance companies might have something to say if there was an electrical fire & you hadn't maintained the installation). Also I expect it would need to be brought up to standard when selling (or potentially take a loss on the house price equivalent to the cost of doing the necessary work)

The same was true when I had my roof re-tiled and battened - the whole roof space needed bringing up to current roofing standards, so I added loads more insulation to the current regs, which isn't a bad thing either

@meldrewreborn I am glad to hear you managed to get a new one and what a bargain too!

There are fewer gas ovens around and I am not sure if the bigger stores have them as we didn't come across any when we just brought our new kitchen.

@meldrewreborn I do love a Gas oven, my grandparents always had one and for some reason - I always prefer to cook on one too. My dream oven (weird thing to say I know 😂) Is an Aga - don't ask why though because I couldn't begin to explain

the gas double oven with integral electric grill (how dare you call it a cooker 🤣🤣) is fitted and capable of working. But not tested by actually doing a meal. Oven do vary in performance so Mrs M will have to adjust techniques in all probability.

We're looking for a new oven at the moment - there's just too many out there. @meldrewreborn The second hand route is definitely an idea as it'll only be until mid next year before we move

not too many gas appliances new though. Longevity is certainly a plus point for gas.
