It seems thousands of homes insulated under the ECO4 scheme, have had a botched installation - in fact about 50% of the homes where work has been carried out.
In total, 65,000 households have had solid wall insulation installed since 2022 under the Great British Insulation Scheme and Energy Company Obligation 4 (Eco4).
Out of those households, it is though that more than 30,000 were affected by poor quality work, a minister told Parliament.
This followed an investigation by the BBC which highlighted cases of mould and dry rot in homes insulated externally under the scheme.
Ofgem is overseeing this. and is already notifying the affected households. The original installers will be obliged to carry out repairs at no cost to the homeowner, providing of course that they are still trading. If that is not the case (probably very likely), then the homeowner should still have costs of up to £20,000 covered.
The disruption to those affected is considerable. While the insulation works were primarily external, the damage is evidenced internally and rectification will be very intrusive. And these schemes were aimed at the poorest in society and especially those in fuel poverty. The installers were all supposed to be fully accredited so this level of poor installations is unforgivable.
I think this scheme was financed by energy companies as part of their obligations. One would think that those energy companies would oversee the works to prevent this sort of scandal, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did nothing very much at all, Eon Next promote all this back in the day, I wonder what they have to say now?
