Apparently 66% of households are on the standard variable rate which is virtually the price cap rate. Martin Lewis describes this as the “Pants Rate”.
switching to the next pledge would save circa £50 per annum, while switching to a fixed rate might save a lot more.
i commented in another thread that most households are apathetic when it comes to controlling their energy costs and this is why I wrote that. It seems people moan about the cost of living and higher prices but do little or nothing to reduce their costs.
Getting a fix tariff, will mean paying by direct debit. Initially this will be fixed DD, but a call to customer services can put you on a variable direct debit, where your DD matches your monthly bill, if that suits you.
I sincerely hope that forum members will not be on the pants cap from 1 October.
Current Eon Next customer, ex EDF, Zog and Symbio. Don't think dual fuel saves money and think the smart meter programme is a waste of our money. Chronologically Gifted. If I offend let me know by private message, but I’ll continue to express my opinions nonetheless.
If your tariff is for 24 months, hopefully you're OK to Feb 26!!!.
But Its always worth checking what is available now as prices might be lower still. And remember you can switch electricity separately from Gas, rather than have both fuels on the same deal.
I’m so out of touch with what’s a good tariff for me right now and haven’t really looked since I switched to Next Secure Fixed 24m v2 in Feb 24. I think a few of us here fixed to this tariff at the time. With less than six months until the end of my tariff I will need to start taking an interest again soon.
I'm an Eon Next dual fuel customer with no particular expertise but have some time on my hands that I am using to try and help out a bit.
I actually do need to check which energy supplier I have for my new house and it may be ideal to lock in a fixed tariff now. 😊

Gas standing charges are sharply up, while unit prices are down. Electricity standing charges and unit prices are both up. Predictions for January are for a decrease in the pants cap.
Here are my prices under the current and October 1 OFGEM Price Caps (Direct Debit rates) plus the 13 month Fix v4 that I am currently being offered.
The savings are considerable I'm a low user and if I were on the Price cap rates I'd save £153 per annum. The "difference" percentages are between the October 1 price cap and the 13 month fix currently on offer. All prices are in Pence and include VAT
@meldrewreborn I switched to the Next fixed 18m v4, I think I'm ok until May 2026 however I always have a look now and then.
@JoeSoap it's always best to keep your ear to the ground with the tariffs, we can always get you back up to speed, seems @meldrewreborn is looking after you here
